Personal history
When I was five years old my mum and dad were doing up our house and there were lots of pieces of wood and tools. This is when I started making things, usually model boats. At high school there was a good woodwork room. Woodwork and metalwork were O level subjects back then. For an A level Physics project I investigated the effect of heat and moisture on wood under stress. At this time I built a boat and repaired boats which involved steam bending. I decided to do a B A Three dimensional design course at Newcastle Upon Tyne polytechnic. This was a valuable time to experiment and develop my own ideas. These involved using coppiced Ash timber. I sourced some Ash logs, and made a froe to split them with from an old car leaf spring
After leaving poly I set up my own business in 1993, and since then have produced several successful designs. Ash is one of the best woods for steam bending. Fast grown Ash Is best. This is because fast grown hardwoods normally have more hard summer growth compared to the soft spring growth. In 2013 I started also using Sweet Chestnut from local woods. Every tree has its own unique properties.
As well as making chairs I make tables and specialist steam bent parts for customers.
