Shifting the Shibboleths: Non-Paintings by Jim Nind

Initially trained as an art teacher Dr Jim Nind spent 40 years working as a teacher and academic. During this time he adopted creative approaches to schooling and learner-development grounded in existential and post-modern philosophy.

Abidingly iconoclastic, Jim continues to tilt at the cultural conventions which tend to define art. Grounded in the use of unconventional materials and mixing the media Jim now moves away from paintings which are traditionally flat, rectangular, static, and wall-hung. Here Jim challenges the underlying historical assumptions to build paintings which are not paintings in the usual sense but may be considered ‘non-paintings’. These hang from the ceiling rather than the wall, blow in the breeze like prayer-flags, step into the spaces usually occupied by ‘sculpture’ and adopt techniques usually embraced by weavers, woodworkers, designers and artisans. The result is a strand of three-dimensional paintings which raise questions and invoke emotions, vibrating with colour embedded within implicitly textured surfaces and assert themselves through strident shapes and forms.
