Colin Slee, Valerie Armstrong and Lucy Lutyens return to Artspace Woodbridge with their exhibition: “THE MINDS EYE,”
CAROLINE FISH: This year they are pleased to be joined by ceramist, Caroline Fish with her beautifully designed earthenware vessels based on the landscape and the colours, forms and lines within it.
Caroline’s thrown and hand built ceramics, using earthenware clay, develop instinctively. Decoration is applied in layers of slips and glazes, in response to the form, to create a rich and deep surface. (Suffolk Crafts Society).
COLIN SLEE: Colin’s aim is to create an expressive response to the environment - the changing effects of the elements on water, skies, forests and the countryside which inspire him to portray an atmospheric and emotional sense of place. He needs the stimulation of change in order to continue to evolve and explore new possibilities. The sea and the rivers are the aspects that attract me most, but subjects do vary and other areas of the British Isles now appear in my work. Painter (Ipswich Art Society) Instagram: colinslee7071
VALERIE ARMSTRONG: Valerie creates her paintings intuitively, building up layers of information in paint, glaze, and mixed media. Her present work is strongly informed by a past career as an art therapist as she explores the stories within dreams and memories for her subject matter.
This is how she describes her process: “my paintings begin with spontaneous play or experimentation, using collage, mark making and textures; as the painting begins to reveal itself, the layering process becomes like a dance. Gradually the history below is revealed as a mysterious suggestion of what might be and what might have been. Finally, as the process nears completion, the pace slows, colours become more refined and the marks, more thoughtful. With music as my muse, I allow the subconscious to direct, and visual stories to emerge; sometimes surprisingly, always truthfully.” Painter. LUCY LUTYENS: Recent work continues to be inspired by her home life and farm surroundings. The daily sight and sound of the wildlife around, lifts her spirits and creates a perfect start to a day in the studio.
“This year, I have been playing with scale, some of the work will be recognisable as past maquettes which are now scaled up to allow them to take their place outside in nature”. Sculpture. Instagram: lucylutyenssculpture
