Paintings by Jim Nind
At the start of Lockdown 2020 Jim took the opportunity of enforced solitude to reflect upon the nature of his recent work. From amongst the clutter in a corner of his studio he happened upon a monograph on the work of Mondrian and immediately connected with his pursuit of structural simplicity. Reading into this approach Jim found himself exploring Mondrian’s compositional devices within his own work. Continuing to work on square canvases he adopted Mondrian’s habit of rotating these through 45 degrees to form a regular diamond. There followed a series of over 60 new formalistic paintings reworking Jim’s propensity to use vivid colours and gradually re-combining with his previous use of collaged photographic material with mixed media paintwork. A selection of this strand of work is shown here as a way of representing this period of development in Jim’s painting.
